What is the Principal of Mentalism?

The Principle of Mentalism is the belief that mental phenomena are real and can be explained through the use of mental abilities and concepts. Mentalism is a branch of the supernatural that deals with the supernatural abilities of the mind. Mentalism is the belief that mental phenomena are real and can be explained through the use of mental abilities and concepts. The Principle of Mentalism is the first of the Hermetic Principles.
And as all things were made from contemplation of one, so all things were born from one adaptation.
— The Emerald Tablet
The basic axiom is, “All of the Universe is Mind,” all of the universe exists in the mind of God. So, it’s pantheism. But, it’s also a little more than that. A more detailed way of stating it would be, “All of the universe is an emanation of the Absolute.” Think of Azathoth dreaming the universe. It’s kind of like that, but slightly less existentially horrifying.
I understand the Principle of Mentalism like this — I’m a writer. I create worlds, and I create people, people who have become so vivid to me that it’s like they have minds of their own. Assume that this fictional world that I’ve created exists in some parallel dimension. To the people of that world, I am God. Everything in their world emanates from me, whether it’s a conscious decision on my part or not. They cannot quite perceive me or interact with me, but nonetheless, I control or at least influence everything about their lives. I could change something, like suddenly add a river in a landscape, and there will always have been a river there. People have memories of the river going all the way back to their childhoods, despite the river having only existed since yesterday. I could change a family’s last name, and it will always have been that, going back centuries. I could give a character a sister, and no one will remember a time when she didn’t exist. Her parents will have memories of her birth, although she’s only existed since yesterday. See? Slightly less existentially horrifying.
The Principle of Mentalism assumes that there is a universal “cosmic consciousness,” an Absolute which is everything and from which everything is created. The Absolute, Spirit, or “God” is simply All That Is — nothing is independant from it, and it is infinite. It was, it is, and it shall be. It exists both in the spaces we know and the spaces between them, and all the other spaces. Now, I don’t personally believe that God is constantly toying with our lives and memories like some great cosmic matrix, or like me as the writer. (I do that because I’m human. God doesn’t need to do that.) But I do believe that, just as everything within my fictional worlds is a product of my mind, everything that exists is a product of God’s “Mind” in a similar way.
Why is this a profound occult secret? Because the implication is that we humans have the same power on a much smaller scale. That’s obviously true, isn’t it? I can create worlds like a god, and put those words on paper and make it a manifest thing, so that it will exist in the minds of many other people. And those people will reinvent my world, impacting it with their own minds, and the story that I have written may just change their lives in ways I can’t anticipate. This thing that started as just a dream in my mind could have a massive ripple effect.
If the universe is made of divine thoughtforms, then we can use our own thoughtforms to affect the physical world, and that is magic.
