What does it mean to have a mentality?

Having a mentality means to have a strong belief system about the way the world works. It is the sum total of our thoughts, beliefs, and values that we bring to every situation in our lives. It is what allows us to stand up for what we believe in, and to take action based on those beliefs. It is the foundation on which we build our lives, and it is what allows us to be successful.

When we hear someone referring to “mentality”, we often take it as the way of perceiving the situation and thinking in the set pattern of an individual.
It is not wrong but having a “mentality” is a bit different; a person learns throughout his life-time, learns from his experiences and those experiences help in building an outlook with which he responds in any situation. This means that every single person has his own perception and outlook that is defined as his own mentality.
People often get confused with the personality of a person, as they think that a certain personality of an individual defines his mentality but actually it’s quite different from it. It’s true that the past experiences of an individual build up his personality and mentality but unlike personality, mentality changes with every changing phase of life.
For example, a child will take a situation according to his past experiences of similar situations, and react accordingly but the same person as an adult would react differently as more experiences have been added up throughout the years. But it is not the case with the personality of the same individual as it wouldn’t change, once it has been fully developed ie. after 18 years of age. It simply means that personality can’t be changed, it can only be modified but mentality can.
In the studies of social psychology, it has been discovered that social situations affect human behaviour and it can drastically change a person’s mentality.
For example, if a simple and sober person who is psychologically healthy and has no criminal record, continuously gets humiliated and tortured mentally and physically, can have a changed mentality (may be temporarily) to seek revenge and might do something which would be against the law (because of his recent past experience). It doesn’t mean that his personality has been changed, it surely has been modified and rudeness and bitterness has been added to his personality.
Therefore, it’s easy to say that a criminal has a criminal mentality and a psychologically healthy person has a good and positive mentality, but unfortunately it’s not the case. It solely depends on the recent past experiences of an individual.
I personally can give my own example as well, a few years before I had an emotionally driven mentality and today I have a practical driven mentality but my personality has been constant throughout.
