How Do You Make Men Relevant IN a Setting Where Only Women Can Use Magic?

One of the most difficult challenges in creating a story centered around magic is appealing to a male audience. In a world where only women can use magic, how do you make men relevant? One way is to have them use their skills in nontraditional ways. For example, in the Harry Potter series, Ron Weasley is the best Quidditch player among the boys, but he is also the best Ministry of Magic employee for sorting the mail. Similarly, in Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Piper is the best at fending off bullies, but he is also the bravest and most resourceful of the four Pevensie siblings. By making men use their skills in nontraditional ways, you not only make them more interesting, but you also challenge the traditional gender roles that exist in this type of story.

How do you make men relevant in a setting where only women can use magic?

Making men relevant in a setting where only women can use magic can be a difficult task, but there are a few things that can be done to make them more integral to the story. One way is to make sure that men are included in the magical world from the start. This can be done by having them be born with magical abilities or by learning how to use magic in the same way that women do. It is also important to include men in the magical world’s political and social dynamics. This can be done by having them be part of the ruling class or by having them be involved in the magical wars that take place. Finally, it is important to make sure that men are shown in a positive light. This can be done by showing them as competent wizards and by showing them as being willing to help women in the magical world.

Easy. Magic has a cost.
Which is more cost-effective, golemizing a plow to work on it’s own, or having a man and horse plow the field? If it’s one field, probably magic. If it’s a whole country…man/horsepower is probably going to be orders of magnitude less expensive than golem plows.
And of course men are going to be the ones you send to war. Are you really going to stick your squishy lady-wizard on the front line? Fuck no! Wizards belong behind the infantry line, and unless every single woman is a magician, women as a whole still aren’t going to be physically able to match men in combat with spears, swords, and suchlike.
Basically this is the same problem you have any time you introduce magic into a setting. How do you prevent it from becoming over-powered? Simple. Limits. Limits make for better stories. If everything is effortless there’s no conflict and your story is boring. Limits may change the nature of the conflict and its resolution, but that’s how you make an interesting story.
Perhaps magic requires a blood sacrifice from the magician. Hell, if you really want to make it women’s magic, maybe magic requires menstrual blood or something? That would certainly explain why men can’t use magic. Tie it to the idea of magic is life energy or something, so the magician can either only use magic when she’s menstruating or if she ritually preserves the blood for later. Which means women past menopause and probably pregnant women can’t use magic. There’re some interesting limits and conflict there!
Of course you’ll still need men to make babies.
Really just make sure that magic doesn’t solve every problem that arises in society, because A) that’s just boring, and B) you need situations where being bigger and stronger is still needed, and men tend to do well in those roles. Builders, farmers, soldiers, etc.
Of course this does lead to the question of whether men are equal to women in your society, or whether women are in charge and own harems of men, or if men keep harems of magicians. It all depends on how you design your magic system and how you contextualize everything.
