Watch this video, to the end, it sums it up well:

How do clowns fit in a clown car?

Clowns are often found in a clown car. Clowns are often seen as entertainers, and their job is to make people laugh. Clowns are also often used in children’s birthday parties, and they are a great way to get children excited. Clowns often wear bright colors and often have big, bright smiles. Clowns are a great addition to any clown car, and they are sure to make everyone laugh.

There are different variations, but the most basic principle is that it’s not that hard to fit a bunch of people in a car, if you don’t have to drive it very far.
Let’s crunch some math here. A compact car has something like 3000 liters of internal space. An average adult man takes up about 100 liters of space, and can be significantly smaller. Now, of course, you can’t fit 30 people into that space, since you can’t pack humans in perfectly, but if you strip out the seats, dashboard, console, etc, pad the floor and walls so people can lie down, and pack them in tight, you can pack a dozen people in there pretty easily, and leave space for the driver to maneuver. It wouldn’t be comfortable, but it would be tolerable for a few minutes. In my younger years, we drove six people around in a Toyota Corolla sometimes. Such was unsafe and illegal on public roads, but it wasn’t that hard to do, and we didn’t have to modify the vehicle at all.
The real question is why it looks so impossible on stage. The answer is that they use a bunch of visual tricks to make it look more impressive. A former circus performer answered this in detail a few years ago, but in summary, they do things like painting the car to look like a toy car, and present in on a large and mostly empty stage, where the props we do see are sized to mess with our sense of proportion. All of that makes the car seem smaller than if we were standing next to it. When the clowns climb out, they have a specific routine where each clown will slowly and dramatically extract himself from the vehicle. It has to be entertaining enough that people stay engaged, but takes long enough that it feels like they’ve been climbing out forever.
The performers wear baggy clothes, often with expanding foam hoops and padding which compresses down in the car, but makes them look bigger as they get out (apparently a common tactic is for the last performer to have an animal costume, like a giraffe with a telescoping neck, so he takes up a lot of space when the outfit is fully deployed). One ‘cheat’ the guy mentioned was that their routine had several other clowns on stage, as traffic cops and road workers, doing their bit while the car was in motion, and as the clowns emerged, they subtly slipped in closer and joined the crowd, making it look even bigger.
I wouldn’t exactly call it a magic trick, since everything they’re doing is on full display. It’s more fair to say that it’s a performance, designed to look impressive, even though the process is pretty straightforward. That’s not a criticism, of course. Staging such things in a way that looks impressive but is still practical to put on is a difficult skill to master, and the fact that they manage to pull it off is the real magic here.
