The first card magic I read about is lost in the mists of time & bad pamphlets with poor instructions, and even worse diagrams.
The first I found very helpful were in a classic, “The Amateur Magician’s Handbook,” under the pseudonym of Henry Hays. Great place to start, though card magic has come a LONG way in the decades since then.
