Are Mentalists the Same As Mediums

There is a lot of speculation surrounding whether mentalists and mediums are the same thing. Some people believe that mentalists use mental powers to fool people into thinking they can psychically communicate with the dead, while mediums use their psychic abilities to contact spirits from the other side. Other people believe that mentalists use sleight of hand to fool people, while mediums use their abilities to access information from the spirit world. The main difference between mentalists and mediums is that mentalists use their skills to entertain people, while mediums use their skills to help people connect with their loved ones who have passed on.
Don’t miss the next video; it sums it up nicely:

Are mentalists the same as mediums?

Mentalists are people who use their mental abilities to entertain and amaze audiences. They are similar to mediums in that they use their ability to read minds and communicate with spirits to help people. However, mentalists perform their shows in front of an audience while mediums work with only one or a few people.

Assuming legitimacy, a “medium” is someone who is able to contact those who have died. A “mentalist”, is an old descriptive for someone who has some psychic abilities (like those who are now called “readers”). There’s a lot of fraudulent activity around both of these labels and cynics have a field day claiming that ALL of this work is just fakery. In my experience I have met “mediums” who are genuine and can actually contact those on-the-other-side (despite what Randi claims, there IS an “other side” and there ARE spirits there who can communicate to this side…and no, you don’t have to take my word for it)….and there ARE people who have legitimate psychic gifts who can use them with individuals to help achieve positive results and no, I am not going to set about trying to “prove” any of it. One has to be willing to suspend a materialistic world view to be able to see that there is more going on here than can be measured and weighed and predicted by the scientific method. (Read, Finding Darwin’s God.)
Enough! I’ll step down off the very low soap box now and move on to more interesting topics…like the best chocolate ice cream, the best pasta sauce, etc.
